Beaufort, South Carolina

Well, everybody likes a lighthouse now and then. This is the Hunting Island Light on a barrier island outside Beaufort, South Carolina. It was designed to be moved after the first lighthouse was destroyed by shifting coastlines. This light has been moved once. It is cast iron pieces that just get taken apart and put back together.
Beaufort itself is a beautiful city with a lot of Civil War History. It house Northern Soldiers and was the site of Union Hospitals. Due to the fact that the Union Army had taken over Sherman left the city untouched even though he burned much of other cities. Beaufort has retained many of its Anti-Bellum mansions and other buildings like the Freedman's Church in this picture. On my tour of the city the guide also pointed out places where many movies were filmed because of it's many beautiful houses. Many foundations were
constructed of "Taby" a mixture of oyster shells and limestone. Clara Barton ran a nursing school at one of the hospitals and when a severe hurricane hit she started the Red Cross there in Beaufort.
In addition to the recycling of oyster shells people of Beaufort used bricks brought on boats from Europe as ballast and dumped once they loaded the American cargo to build their streets. Some of the bricks can be seen where pavement has worn off. Quite the recyclers they were!
